    Topic: Workplace Privacy & Confidentiality Through an Ethics Lens

    Join us to review legal requirements to protect employees’ right to privacy and maintain employers’ duty of confidentiality, and how complying with these legal requirements can help HR demonstrate the credibility and trust of HR’s Code of Ethics. Although Privacy and Confidentiality are required by law, understanding the nuances and properly communicating expectations to employees and business leaders can enhance HR’s ability to achieve the highest standards of ethical service and conduct.

    • State and Federal Laws and Privacy Standards
    • Common Claims against Employers
    • Confidential Medical and Personal Information
    • Confidentiality of Investigations, Disciplinary Action and Performance Management

    Speaker: Laura Gallagher

    Laura is a senior counsel attorney and part of Saxton & Stump’s Labor and Employment, Business and Corporate, and Construction groups in the firm’s Lancaster office. She has worked as a labor and employment attorney in the Lancaster area and nationally for more than 25 years, counseling business leaders and human resources professionals. Laura defends litigation in federal and state courts and administrative charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state agencies in 30 states. She also served as outside employment law counsel for a global confectionery, pet food, and food manufacturer, one of the primary attorneys the company’s managers contacted for legal guidance for over 25 years. Laura is also part of the team at TREW HR, a human resources consulting company and Saxton & Stump affiliate.

    At Saxton & Stump, Laura works with companies on issues such as:

    • Family and Medical Leave Act and state leave rights

    Laura also provides daily advice for clients on important questions around hiring, performance, investigations, termination and medical concerns. She handles all aspects of litigation and conducts training sessions for clients and organizations.

    She is a former president and a current member of the Occupational Development Center Board of Directors in Lancaster. She also serves in current and former leadership positions at the Lancaster Society for Human Resource Management, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Lancaster Bar Association.

    Laura earned her law degree at Widener University School of Law. While there, she worked as a research assistant for state and federal law issues, assisted students, and researched items for a law review article on the history of Pennsylvania courts. She also studied abroad at the Summer International Law Institute in Geneva, Switzerland, and spent an academic year as a legal intern at the Lancaster County Office of the District Attorney.

    Before law school, Laura worked in marketing positions after graduating from Bucknell University. She worked in the Philadelphia area, Hershey, and as the marketing director at Central Penn Nursing Care in Lancaster. While at Bucknell, she studied abroad at the Syracuse University London Centre.

    Speaker: Christine Nentwig 

    Christine E. Nentwig, Esq. is the founder and principal attorney at Excelist Law, a boutique law firm dedicated to helping employers and businesses achieve their goals with practical, business-focused legal solutions. With experience in both business and law, Ms. Nentwig specializes in providing effective guidance to address complex legal challenges.

    Ms. Nentwig partners with clients to proactively address potential legal issues, offering strategic support in areas such as developing clear policies, navigating employee relations, conducting confidential workplace investigations, mediating disputes, and providing informative training for managers and employees on diverse topics related to business, employment, and labor law. When legal challenges do arise, Ms. Nentwig provides efficient representation to help her clients identify and implement prompt, practical, and cost- effective solutions.

    Ms. Nentwig holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Maryland School of Law and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She also holds a Professional Mediation Certificate from Cornell University’s ILR Scheinman Institute and is certified as a federal court mediator in Labor and Employment Law for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Additionally, Ms. Nentwig is an Association of Workplace Investigators Certificate Holder (AWI-CH), demonstrating her expertise in conducting impartial workplace investigations.

    Beyond her practice, Ms. Nentwig is an active community leader and educator, currently serving on the Board of the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, leading seminars covering key legal topics, and teaching Employment Law as an adjunct professor at York College of Pennsylvania.
